Dear friends, today I am going to discuss about MEMS (Micro-electro-Mechanical-systems). The main focus of today is to focus on smart materials and micro systems.
What is an smart material?
Answer to this question is, Material which has the intrinsic or extrinsic capabilities to respond to an external stimulus in a functionally useful manner.
Smart materials : Effects
A smart structure integrates the properties of embedded sensors, actuators & control mechanisms in order to respond to a given stimulus in a functionally useful manner. Usually this involves implementing hardware and/ or software control mechanisms.
Smart system research :
Smart structures is a multidisciplinary area requiring understanding of
Mechanical stress -> Electrical sensor (Direct effect)
Electric field -> Mechanical strain (Converse effect)

Answer to this question is, Material which has the intrinsic or extrinsic capabilities to respond to an external stimulus in a functionally useful manner.
Smart materials : Effects
- Act simultaneously as sensors and actuators.
- Perform controlled mechanical action without any external mechanisms.
- Are adoptive with environmental conditions.
- High level miniaturization.
- New functions development.

Mechanical stress -> Electrical sensor (Direct effect)
Electric field -> Mechanical strain (Converse effect)
2. Fibre optic sensors :
Works on the principle of total internal reflection.
3. Electro-resistive materials :
- Very similar to piezo-electric material.
- It is generally used for actuation purpose.
- It has fast response time (Advantage).
- Works upto 50 kHZ of frequency.
- Very brittle in nature (Disadvantage)
4. Magneto-strictive materials :
- Similar to electrostriction
- It can be used for sensing & actuation.
- Generally it can be used for large actuating force ( order of kN ).
Since there are another materials also that are also important for our consideration, I will pause here. I promise you that, will come with other type of materials very soon. Thank You.
