Introduction to MEMS

Dear Friends, The topic of today is MEMS. This is considered as one of the emerging field now a days.What is MEMS basically?
       MEMS is Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems.Lets start with this topic-

1. Manufactured on semiconductor material.
2. Used for preparation of sensors, actuators, switches & Light reflectors.
3. Used in Automobiles, Aerospace technologies, Bio-medical applications, Ink-Jet printers, Wireless & Optical communications.
4. Range in size from a micro-meter to millimeter.

Now Let's see the historical preview of this topic:-

• 1947-Invention of point contact Transistor ( The trio of John Bardeen, William Shockly, Walter Brattain had invented this device).
• 1954-Discovery of piezo-resistive effect in Silicon (Si) & Germanium (Ge).
• 1958-Invention of first Integrated Circuit (IC)
• 1959-"There is plenty of room at the bottom", famous statement by Nobel Laureate Richard Feynman.  
• 1968-The resonant-Gate Transistor.
• 1971-Invention of Micro-processor.
• 1979- HP micro machined Ink jet Nozzle.
• 1982-LIGA process introduced.
• 1986- Invention of Atomic-Force-Microscope.
• 1993- Multi-User MEMS process (MUMPs) had emerged.

This is the base for MEMS. The history has always an impact on the present and the present affects the future.In the next post I will try to put forth more aspects on MEMS. Thank You
